Girl saying thanks against a sunset | The Power of Gratitude

It’s been a while since I last mailed, and a lot has happened… and will be happening in future. Before I begin, I’d like to wish those of you over the pond, in the US, a belated Happy Thanksgiving! (I hope you all had a lovely time with family and friends).

Even if you’re not from the States, I personally believe it’s always good to sometimes take a moment and just stop, then reflect on where you are in Life, and then be thankful and grateful for all that you have.

I had originally intended to send this as an email broadcast message. As I began to write, and the more I meditated on what it means to be Thankful and Grateful, I suddenly realised that, instead of a simple email, the amount of content I had produced was, perhaps, a little more suited to a blog post!

During the course of my “meditation”, I also did some research and came across a great many articles and blog posts about the power of Gratitude. There’s a lot of information about What and Why you should try and attain this state (even Oprah suggests that you should be Grateful!)… but  How can you easily achieve this state? There seemed to be very little information on the steps required to get there!

With this in mind, I have produced this “How To” audio guide on how to attain a state of Gratitude. This guide is loosely based on an excellent “uptime trance”, which I am grateful to have been taught while training to become an NLP Master Practitioner.

I have created this guide, primarily for anyone who may find it difficult to think of things to be Grateful for in Life. I hope that this post will enable you to begin to use this powerful mental state, and enable you to move forward on your journey..!

In the last few days, inspired by the notion of Thanksgiving, I’ve been meditating on what it means to be truly Grateful, and be thankful for what you have. Giving thanks, for some, can sometimes just mean saying a few words over a meal in the company of friends and family… but this powerful state of Gratitude, and sense of being Present, can offer much much more…

Why Gratitude?

As you will see, when you are able to acquire a state of Gratitude, it has the power to strip away all negative thoughts. When you are able to be in control of the power which you possess, when you are truly inside the feeling of Gratitude, then you will come to easily realise the calming effects of this positive state and become Present, focused and determined on your journey toward those riches in Life…

After all, how do you know you’re on the right journey, if you don’t take the time to stop and check where you are? On the busy highway of Life, it’s easy to just keep going, not checking the signs, and so we can sometimes find ourselves lost and without direction. True Gratitude is stopping and checking the map, to get you back on your journey and heading the right way again!

Being a student of Think and Grow Rich, you may already be familiar with the Statement and Expression of Gratitude (Master Key Introduction video by Napoleon Hill):

“O Divine Providence, I ask not for more riches but more Wisdom
with which to make wiser use of the riches you gave me at birth,
consisting in the power to control and direct my own mind
to whatever ends I desire.”

If you’ve never really considered, or simply wondered why Mr Hill emphasises the daily expression of Gratitude, then hopefully all will be revealed soon… :)

Stay with me, and I’ll endeavour to explain…

The Benefits of Gratitude

There are many articles that have shown scientific research into the benefits of Gratitude. I won’t be going into them here, as you can Google and find lots of resources online. Here are just a few benefits of possessing an “Attitude of Gratitude”:

  1. Gratitude helps you to bounce back more easily from problems.
  2. Gratitude makes you feel happier, and generally helps you feel better about yourself.
  3. Gratitude helps strengthen your relationships, and deepens friendships.
  4. Gratitude reduces feelings of envy in an existing relationship.
  5. Gratitude helps you make new friends, and network more easily.
  6. Gratitude helps to strengthen your emotions.
  7. Gratitude can help to increase your self-esteem.
  8. Gratitude makes you generally more optimistic about Life.
  9. Gratitude help make you less self-centered, and more sociable and caring.
  10. Gratitude helps you create more positive memories.
  11. Gratitude can help make you become a more effective manager.
  12. Gratitude can increase your goal achievement, improve your decision making, and boost your productivity.
  13. Gratitude helps with relaxation, improves your sleep, and can also increase your energy levels.
  14. Gratitude makes us healthier.

For more information, you can also check out a really quite in-depth post on the 31 Benefits of Gratitude by Amit Amin on the Happier Human website.

As you can see, there’s quite a lot to be gained from practicising Gratitude on a daily basis!

Requirements to Achieving Gratitude

There are are no pre-requisities to achieving Gratitude! You do not need to be religious,  spiritual, or subscribe to an alternative, holistic lifestyle, in order to benefit from it!

All you really need to be able to do is to “Stop”, and have a little bit of time to practice being Grateful!

There some people who are naturally grateful, and are positive in their outlook on Life. For those of us who aren’t, the good news is that it’s possible to practice this powerful state. As with anything new, it’s recommended that you practice daily until it feels natural, and becomes a excellent and positive habit (and personality trait)!

If you’ve never really noticed or experienced the exquisite calmness and meditative quality of true Gratitude, I would certainly recommend you try it. There is a strength and power to be found in your own feeling of purposeful Gratitude.

Achieving Gratitude: Before You Begin

The following audio track, which you are about to listen to, is loosely based on an “uptime trance” guided meditation that I was fortunate enough to learn while training to become an NLP Master Practitioner.

There are a couple of points that you should note, before you begin using this audio guide:

  • Firstly, find yourself a nice, comfortable space, without distractions (if possible).
  • When you first practice, ensure you are entirely focused on being guided by this track. Just allow yourself to just go with the track, and let my voice be a guide.
  • You will need a few minutes to complete listening to the track, although you can repeat it several times if you wish.
  • You can do this exercise either with your eyes open or closed (whichever you feel more comfortable with) – it doesn’t matter.
  • This audio serves as a guide for you to practice, until such time that you feel confident that you can just call up this mental state whenever you desire.
  • Listen and practice this daily until you feel you can do this by yourself.
  • After you have learned the basics (i.e. how to calm yourself by regulating your breathing, and clearing your mind), practice achieving this state without the audio guide.
  • If you feel confident enough to call up Gratitude when you require it, challenge yourself to be in this state in a slightly distracting environment (for example: like waiting in a shopping queue; waiting for a bus or taxi; while brushing your teeth!).

You can also read along using the transcript below:

You are listening to this track because you want to discover how easy it is to achieve a state of Gratitude.

Feeling true Gratitude only requires that you stop, find an inner  space of calm, and take a few moments to be quietly Present to yourself.

So let us begin…

Just allow my voice to be your guide and just take a breath…

…in through your nose, and out through your mouth…

Relax and just allow yourself to clear all thoughts, right now…

…consciously breathing, and allow yourself to relax with each breath.

It’s good to breathe… slowly and deliberately…

…being consciously in control of each and every breath, you’re breathing.

As you continue to breathe, just notice you’re breathing, in the background, as you allow the next part to easily sink in and make sense…

You may already find that, through this simple act – where you are consciously breathing -
you are already beginning to find a calm and pleasant state of mind.

…all the while, still breathing…

…in through your nose, and out through your mouth…

…allow your body to become relaxed with each breath.

If you’re not quite there, in this calm space, now, then perhaps allow yourself to slow down your breathing, a little more, before you continue…

…keep slowing down your breath, until you feel calm,

…you are completely in control of your own experience.

Now, when you find you are in your calm space, just allow your Unconsious mind to bring up anything that you feel you can be grateful for…

…thoughts of people you love and really appreciate…

…the skills you’ve acquired, and all you have learned…

…all of the wonderful possessions that you have, right now.

As you do so, allow yourself to strip away any negative thoughts

… and focus your mind on the Positive aspects of your innermost thoughts.

Continue to breathe, and relax…

…And now, just acknowledge all Positivity, and welcome it.

You may now be experiencing a certain warmth, which is natural when you easily accept the positive feeling of Gratitude…

…and maybe you can just feel okay to be smiling… :)

…just enjoying this moment with your positive thoughts…

…and you may or may not have noticed a sense of Clarity,
now that you’ve let go of all negativity.

Perhaps, as you are inside your pleasant state of Gratitude, you may also find that your mind is able to see new opportunities…

…now that you are calm and back in control, completely Present to yourself.

Notice how when you simply…

Stop, Breathe, Slow Down… and Regain Control of Yourself…

…it’s easy to achieve the calming, powerful feeling of true Gratitude.

Now you’ve achieved a sense of true Gratitude, you may be able to just realise that all of the things that you are now grateful for are the Resources, which you may or may not be able to use on your journey moving forward…

the people you love and really appreciate…

…the skills you’ve acquired, and all you have learned…

…all of the possessions that you have now.

Your ability to be Present to yourself, in this moment, now, with completely Clarity of purpose, is the powerful force of true Gratitude…

…the power of being Present is something you now possess…

…and you have the clarity to choose to live Life as you so desire!

This is the true Power of Gratitude!

(I hope you can now enjoy it and use it purposefully within your Life!).

Deepening Gratitude: Suggestions

To really enjoy all the benefits that Gratitude brings, then you must choose to make a commitment to practicising Gratitude every day! Like all habits, it does take a little time and patience to learn, but the benefits you will receive will come to you in time.

Gratitude is one of the riches you can be rewarded with in Life, if you take the necessary time and effort to properly invest into it.

Here are a few more suggestions about how you can use and benefit from Gratitude:

  • Keep a daily Gratitude journal to help remind yourself of positive things.
  • Be in the State of Gratitude, when expressing your appreciation for someone.
  • Express your appreciation for someone, when you feel they deserve it. Be congruent with expression, rather than just “saying the words because you think  you should”…
(If you are a Manager, you will gain more respect by doing so, and people will recognise your integrity!)
  • Use the State of Gratitude to look back on past problems issues, to discover and gain the positive outcomes from the experience.
(Note: this is slightly more challenging – I would recommend being confident you can easily call up your State of Gratitude, before you attempt to do so… more about this in Part 2!)

And Finally…

You may be interested to know that  Gratitude can aid you on your financial journey towards riches! For more information of how you can use Gratitude towards these ends, I would recommend reading “The Science of Getting Rich” by Wallace D Wattles (now available on this website!). Note: This book served as a major inspiration for Rhonda Byrne’s best selling movie and book, The Secret (2006).

In particular, I have personally found “Chapter 7: Gratitude” to be extremely helpful, in terms of understanding how important Gratitude is in relation to your journey in the accumulation of personal wealth.

And Yes… in keeping with the American holiday tradition of Black Friday (although a little late!), I decided to provide a special holiday discount offer*! All purchases, donations, Likes & Tweets are greatly appreciated and I am truly grateful for all the support, which helps to pay for my hosting charges and keep this site going!

I would like to leave you with this thought – a quote from Chapter 7: Gratitude – which I feel is very pertinent:

“The grateful mind is constantly fixed upon the best; therefore it tends to become the best; it takes the form or character of the best, and will receive the best.”
